The Universal Basic Education Commission (UBEC) has reaffirmed its commitment to establishing digital libraries in public schools across the country, alongside cost-effective solutions for providing educational resources to both learners and teachers.

This announcement was made during the opening of a three-day training workshop on Digital Library and Education Resource Management at the UBEC Digital Resource Centre in Abuja.

Bashir Galadanci, the National Coordinator of the UBEC Digital Resource Centre, highlighted the transformative role of digital libraries in education. “Digital libraries have introduced diverse, multiple, and exciting media formats, including videos, games, and interactive simulations,” he said. Galadanci, who was representing the UBEC Executive Secretary, stressed the commission’s commitment to making educational resources more accessible and engaging for students and educators.

The workshop aimed to enhance the understanding of digital libraries and their role in smart education delivery. Hafsat Kontagora, Head of Capacity Building at the UBEC Digital Resource Centre, explained that the training would provide hands-on experience in organizing, categorizing, and managing digital content. “This training is designed to improve the skill sets of smart school teachers and ICT personnel, equipping them with the necessary knowledge to effectively manage digital libraries and utilize resources to enhance teaching and learning outcomes,” Kontagora added.

The training, which included teachers and ICT managers from 13 functional smart schools in Nigeria, covered critical aspects of digital library management, educational resource organization, and emerging trends in educational technology. Practical sessions focused on setting up local servers, cataloguing digital resources, and navigating the UBEC Digital Library, giving participants valuable experience in managing digital tools to foster better educational environments.
