African Fact-Checking Awards 2024 offers $3,000 prize for outstanding journalism

The African Fact-Checking Awards 2024, the longest-running programme recognizing excellence in fact-checking journalism in Africa, has officially opened its application process. In its eleventh year, the awards aim to celebrate outstanding fact-checking efforts by journalists, students, and professional fact-checkers across the continent.

Benefits:
The winner in each of the first two categories will receive a prize of $3,000, while the runner-up will receive $1,500. The winner in the student journalist category will be awarded $2,000, with a $1,000 prize for the runner-up.

Eligibility:
To qualify for the awards, submissions must be the original work of the individual or team identified in the entry form as the author(s). The fact-check must expose a claim on a significant topic that originated in or is relevant to Africa, and it must have been first published or broadcast between July 1, 2023, and July 14, 2024. All entries should be thoroughly fact-checked, with verifiable sources.

Application process:
Participants must submit their entries through the official African Fact-Checking Awards website. Entries must include the fact-check report, along with any supporting documentation or links to the original publication. All should be sent here.

Application deadline: July 14, 2024.
