The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has decided to suspend its proposed industrial action in Akwa Ibom State, following interventions by Governor Umo Eno to address the union’s concerns.
According to a statement issued by Ekerete Udoh, the Chief Press Secretary to Governor Umo Eno, on Wednesday, the decision to suspend the strike was reached after a meeting between the governor and a cross-section of labor leaders from Akwa Ibom State University at the Government House, Uyo.
Governor Eno pledged to address several issues, including the payment of the 13th-month salary bonus, three months’ palliative, and the construction of strategic roads within the university’s main campus at Ikot Akpaden.
Emphasizing the importance of the university as a pride of the state, Governor Eno urged the university’s management to utilize internally generated revenue efficiently. He also assured that the government would consistently provide monthly subventions as scheduled.
The ASUU leaders, led by Comrade (Elder) Sunny James, the Chairperson of the Nigerian Labour Congress, Akwa Ibom State Chapter, and Dr. Inyang Udosen, the Chairperson of ASUU AKSU chapter, commended the governor for his “labor-friendly” approach. They expressed gratitude for his commitment to addressing the contentious issues and assured that the planned strike would be called off.
“We appreciate the governor for his labor-friendly stance and his commitment to resolving several contentious issues. In light of his promises, we have decided to suspend our planned strike,” the statement read.
