National Science, Engineering Competition
Government Technical College (GTC) in Calabar, Cross River State, has secured a spot in the upcoming National Engineering/Science Competition organized by the Association of Professional Women Engineers of Nigeria (APWEN), slated for April this year in Abuja. APWEN, the Women Wing of the Nigeria Society of Engineers (NSE), revealed this development.

The announcement was made by APWEN National President, Engr. Dr. Adebisi Osim, in Calabar on Saturday following GTC’s victory in the science/engineering competition held by the state chapter of professional women engineers. GTC emerged victorious after triumphing over eight other participating schools at the NSE Centre in Calabar.

Their winning project involved constructing a balloon car within seven minutes using Newton’s law of motion, earning them a score of 92.5 points.

Engr. Osim, addressing the theme “A New Era for Sustainability” during the celebration of International Day for Women and Girls in Science, emphasized the transformative power of science and engineering in addressing societal challenges and urged young girls to pursue these fields.

Commenting on the significance of the national engineering competition, Engr. Mrs. Faith Itam, the Cross River State chapter chairman of APWEN, highlighted the role of science and technology in combating poverty, unemployment, and other pressing issues in Nigeria.

Winners from GTC will represent APWEN Calabar chapter at the South-South zonal level, with a chance to progress to the national stage of the competition.
