The European Union has announced on Tuesday the expansion of its Erasmus Plus postgraduate scholarships to both academic and non-academic staff members of Nigerian higher institutions. The EU anticipates that this expansion will foster knowledge-sharing and professional growth among the Nigerian academic community.
In a statement released by the European Union Delegation to Nigeria in Abuja, EU Ambassador to Nigeria and ECOWAS, Samuela Isopi, highlighted the success of the Erasmus scholarship, describing it as a testament to the EU’s commitment to educational advancement.
Ambassador Isopi stated, “The Erasmus+ Scholarship Programme offers a beacon of opportunity for Nigerians seeking to advance their academic pursuits in Europe. It is not only about expanding educational horizons but also about building bridges of knowledge and fostering cultural exchange.”
The statement revealed that the Erasmus+ Scholarship Programme, which has sponsored around 800 Nigerians since 2004, is extending its scope to include teaching and non-teaching staff of higher education institutions. This move is expected to enhance knowledge-sharing and contribute to the professional growth of staff members in Nigerian higher education.
The EU ambassador encouraged eligible Nigerians, including higher education institution staff, to explore the official Erasmus+ Scholarship website for comprehensive details on application procedures, eligibility criteria, available fields of study, and invaluable opportunities for career advancement.
“Erasmus+ nurtures not only individual development but also strengthens the bonds between Nigeria and the European Union through the power of education,” the statement emphasised.
The EU has been actively supporting educational initiatives in Nigeria, having awarded postgraduate scholarships to over 800 young Nigerians since 2014. This initiative reflects the EU’s commitment to fostering academic collaboration and cultural exchange between Nigeria and the European Union.
