Peter Okebukola, former Executive Secretary of the National Universities Commission (NUC), has called on the federal government to prioritize quality education by increasing investment in the sector in 2025.
Speaking with journalists in Ota, Ogun, on Sunday, Okebukola highlighted inadequate funding as a significant challenge undermining Nigeria’s educational system.
He emphasized that poor investment in education contributes to low literacy rates, limited skills development, and stunted economic growth. “Nigeria is the most populous country in Africa, but its investment in education is relatively low compared to its population size and needs,” he stated.
Okebukola warned that neglecting education hampers national development, leaving Nigeria dependent on foreign expertise and technology. He further noted that underinvestment in education limits citizens’ ability to innovate, think critically, and compete globally, fostering a sense of intellectual inferiority compared to other nations.
