The Five Cowries Initiative (FCI) have donated “My Story of Water” worksheets to about 1,800 school pupils in Kaduna and Ogun on June 10.
These sets of pupils became the first in Nigeria to receive such gesture from the firm.
In recent times across Nigeria, school children have been made to stay away from their classrooms as a result of coronavirus preventive measures.
To address this challenge, Five Cowries Initiative came up with an initiative by developing ‘Home Learning Kits”, a creative way to keep school-age children motivated, occupied, and positive during the nationwide school closure.
These worksheets do not require access to electricity or data. They are part of a fuller alternative education plan, keen on exploring the use of arts in nurturing creativity in education.
The worksheets will be used in collaboration with other supporting activities. Such as, a weekly 30-minute radio show incorporating lessons, storytelling, current affairs, and call-ins led teachers.
The 1,800 children who received initial worksheets will continually receive subsequent worksheets–in line with the learning schedule, every two weeks for a period of four months.
Distribution is yet to begin in Lagos State, however, FCI has been developing creative programmes with the Ministry of Education and the Commissioner for Education, Mrs. Folasade Adefisayo, who is an active supporter of the “My Story of Water” project.
Five Cowries Initiative is set to commence the distribution of 1500 worksheets across SOS villages this week. FCI aims to replicate its current successes nationwide.
It is working closely with technical and implementing partners including, Teach For Nigeria and SOS Children in developing the educational content and DHL in delivering the sheets across the nation.
FCI, however, assured of its commitment to fostering the preservation of indigenous languages. The worksheets are currently available in Yoruba, Igbo and French. It will soon be translated into Hausa and Kanuri.
