The proposed Federal University of Education in Numan, Adamawa State, successfully passed its second reading in the Senate on Tuesday.

The bill, fervently sponsored by Senator Binos Dauda Yaroe, garnered support from various quarters as lawmakers emphasized its pivotal role in shaping the nation’s educational landscape.

Senator Yaroe, reflecting on the bill’s previous passage in the 9th Senate and its subsequent non-assent by former President Muhammadu Buhari, articulated the timeliness of establishing the institution. He underscored the university’s potential to “train the trainers,” emphasizing the critical role it would play in producing qualified individuals for the education sector, not only in Adamawa but across the nation.

Highlighting the general principles of the bill, Senator Yaroe asserted that the Federal University of Education, Numan, would serve as a hub for nurturing human resources essential for the country’s development. He stressed the strategic importance of the institution in addressing the current educational needs.

Support for the bill resonated strongly, with Senator Abdul Ningi from Bauchi Central Senatorial District expressing the belief that the university would contribute significantly to addressing the manpower needs of North East Nigeria. Drawing attention to the historical significance of Numan in Adamawa State, he appealed to fellow Senators to rally behind the bill, citing the absence of federal presence in one of the oldest emirates.

Senator Godiya Akwashiki, representing Nasarawa North Senatorial District, underscored the Senate’s tradition of reconsidering bills that faced non-assent due to time constraints. The sentiment echoed throughout the session, leading to a unified endorsement of the bill during the voice votes.

Senate President Godswill Akpabio, acknowledging the widespread support for the Federal University of Education, passed the bill for a second reading. It is now set to undergo further scrutiny by the Senate Committee on Education and Tertiary Institutions, marking a significant step forward in the realization of this educational milestone.
