The Federal Government has allocated N40 billion to enhance the security and living conditions in all 118 federal unity colleges across Nigeria.
In a move aimed at safeguarding students and staff, N20 billion has been set aside for the construction of perimeter fencing around the schools, while an additional N20 billion will address irregular power supply by installing solar energy systems.
According to an analysis of the 2025 budget by The Guardian, both initiatives are included under the Federal Ministry of Education’s projects. The projects, titled “Provision of Security Infrastructure in 118 Unity Colleges: Perimeter New Fencing” and “Provision of Security Infrastructure in 118 Unity Colleges: Solar New,” reflect the government’s commitment to improving the safety and functionality of educational institutions nationwide.
The decision comes amid growing concerns over school security. A report by Save the Children International in 2021 revealed that over 1,000 students were abducted from Nigerian schools, including 80 pupils and five teachers from Federal Government College, Birnin-Yauri, Kebbi State.
Reacting to the announcement, the President-General of the Unity Schools Old Students Association (USOSA), Michael Magaji, commended the initiative. He highlighted its potential to significantly enhance the learning environment for students.
“This is well appreciated. It will give the children more time to read and improve their learning experience and learning outcomes. Security and protecting the lives of our children in school is key,” Magaji said.
He also stressed the importance of teaching students and teachers to be more security-conscious. “Children and teachers should also be taught how to be security conscious and how to report the same to relevant authorities when they suspect there is a potential breach of security in and around the school environment,” he added.
The investment marks a critical step toward addressing longstanding issues of insecurity and inadequate infrastructure in Nigeria’s unity schools, setting the stage for safer and more conducive learning environments.
