The Federal Government has announced its approval of free internet services worth N24.2 billion at selected airports, tertiary institutions, and markets across the country.
The Minister of Communications and Digital Economy, Isa Pantami, made the announcement after the Federal Executive Council meeting chaired by President Muhammadu Buhari on Wednesday, March 29.
Pantami revealed that the project would be implemented by the Nigerian Communications Commission, providing internet services in 20 selected airports, 43 universities, and six markets across the six geo-political zones in Nigeria.
He added that the project would support micro, small, and medium enterprises, ease e-learning in schools, and enhance the transition to a cashless economy.
The first phase of the project, providing unlimited internet in 17 universities and one college of education, was approved by the FEC in October 2022. The second phase of the project includes 20 airports, 43 institutions of learning, and six markets. The total cost of the project is N18.95 billion and N5.25 billion for the airports and markets, respectively.
