The Federal Government has officially renamed all Federal Science and Technical Colleges (FSTCs) to Federal Technical Colleges (FTCs) in a strategic move to strengthen technical and vocational education across the country.
Announcing the change at a stakeholders’ meeting on Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) in Abuja, Minister of Education, Dr. Tunji Alausa, emphasized that the decision aligns with President Bola Tinubu’s vision to reduce youth unemployment, create jobs, and build a technologically driven society.
According to Permanent Secretary, Dr. Nasir Gwarzo, this is more than a mere name change—it marks a fundamental shift in educational priorities to better prepare students for an evolving workforce and industry-driven economy.
However, Dr. (Mrs.) Olodo M.A., Director of Technology and Science Education, raised concerns over the low participation of teachers in STEM and TVET training.
She called for better coordination in teacher development to ensure students receive quality education without disruptions.
Additionally, Mrs. Offokeansi I. S., Chairman of all Federal Technical Colleges and Principal of FTC Otukpo, urged school heads to improve communication during student transitions. She stressed the importance of ensuring that no JSS 3 student is denied admission due to overcrowding or poor coordination.
This renaming and restructuring of FTCs is expected to equip Nigerian youth with industry-relevant skills, positioning TVET as a key driver of economic growth and national development.
