Armed Fulani herdsmen stormed the premises of Federal University Wukari in Taraba State, seizing two former students who had returned to the institution to finalize their academic records.
The incident, which unfolded on Monday, sent shockwaves through the university community and beyond.
Confirming the distressing development, Sule Gani, the university’s Chief Security Officer, conveyed the grim details to journalists during a phone interview.
According to Gani, the victims, a male and a female, were abducted while patronizing a shop within the university premises.
“The Fulani herdsmen infiltrated the university grounds and forcibly took away two of our students who had returned to clear their papers,” Gani recounted. “Eyewitnesses, including the food vendors present at the scene, corroborated that the attackers were indeed Fulani.”
Expressing deep concern over the safety of the abducted individuals, Gani assured that both military and police forces had been swiftly mobilized to initiate rescue efforts. The collaborative operation aims to secure the prompt and safe release of the kidnapped graduates.
The incident underscores the escalating security challenges faced by educational institutions and communities across Nigeria, particularly in regions with a history of farmer-herder conflicts. It also highlights the vulnerability of students and alumni, whose pursuit of education is marred by the specter of violence and insecurity.
