STEAM UP Lagos and open access data centers have joined forces to inspire girls to pursue Science Technology Engineering Mathathetics (STEM) careers, in a groundbreaking effort to bridge the gender gap in STEM fields STEAM UP Lagos, a local nonprofit organisation, has partnered with Open Access Data Centers to launch a mentorship programme aimed at empowering young girls in secondary schools.
The programme, held under the auspices of Adetola Salau, PhD, the senior special assistant on Education to the Executive Governor of Lagos State, aims to promote STEM education among girls and encourage them to pursue careers in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics.
The third edition of the Girls in STEM Mentorship Programme took place on Thursday, June 1st, at the prestigious Lagos State Senior Model College in Badore-Ajah.
The event brought together a diverse group of accomplished professionals, educators, and government representatives who were passionate about empowering young girls and building a brighter future for Lagos.
The programme featured Uzo Nwani, a technology executive advisor, and Jessica Mayomi, a senior product designer at Zealight Innovation Labs, as the keynote speakers. Both speakers captivated the audience with their remarkable journeys and shared valuable insights on the limitless opportunities available in STEM fields.
Ayotunde Coker, the CEO of Open Access Data Centers, expressed his enthusiasm for supporting such a transformative initiative. “By investing in the education and mentorship of young girls in STEM, we are fostering a generation of talented innovators who will contribute to the growth and development of Lagos State and beyond,” Coker emphasised.
The event also witnessed the presence of notable figures, including Martins Eneh, who represented the director general of Lagos Chamber of Commerce and Industry, Nikki Popoola, the director of sales West Africa at WIOCC, Adeshola Adesugba, country marketing manager for DADC, and Alex, principal of Lagos State Senior Model College. The Principals of both Lagos State Senior Model College and Lagos State Junior Model College, Ajikobi Azumi and Alhaji Ajetunmobi R.T., respectively, were also in attendance, showing their unwavering support for the program.
