The Deputy Governor of Lagos State, Dr Obafemi Hamzat, has declared that government alone cannot fund tertiary education.

Hamzat made this disclosure when he paid a courtesy visit to the Vice Chancellor of the University of Ibadan, Professor Kayode Adebowale, on Wednesday.

Edugist reports that Hamzat was in the institution as the special guest of honour and keynote speaker at the 2021-2022 Nigerian Society of Engineers induction ceremony for graduate membership.

Edugist learnt that the Lagos deputy governor obtained his first and second degrees in Agricultural Engineering from the university in 1986 and 1988, respectively.

Hamzat said: “Government alone cannot fund tertiary education. In developed countries, the alumni provide support for the development of their alma maters.

“It is the responsibility of the alumni to ensure the continued existence of the University for future generations.”

VC Adebowale said in his speech that Hamzat would be decorated as a UI@75 ambassador.
