Lagos State Deputy Governor, Dr. Kadri Obafemi Hamzat, has charged secondary school students to develop a growth mindset, emphasizing that intelligence can be cultivated through effort, learning, and persistence.
Speaking at the event “A Day with the Deputy Governor of Lagos State” and the launch of the EkoSTEAM Mentorship Series, Hamzat, represented by the Commissioner for Tertiary Education, Hon. Tolani Sule, encouraged students to embrace innovation and critical thinking, key drivers of success in Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Mathematics (STEAM). The event, organized by the Lagos State Government, was held at Ikeja Senior High School.
“Innovation begins with curiosity,” Hamzat stated. “I urge you to challenge the status quo and take bold steps towards generating novel solutions to contemporary challenges.” He reaffirmed the government’s commitment to fostering student development in an increasingly technology-driven world.
Highlighting the transformative role of Artificial Intelligence (AI) across STEAM disciplines, he noted that AI is revolutionizing industries such as healthcare, agriculture, and education. He cited AI-driven medical diagnostics, smart farming technologies, and personalized learning platforms as examples of innovation shaping the future.
Senior Special Assistant to Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu on Basic and Secondary Education, Eniola Opeyemi, stressed the importance of research and a supportive learning ecosystem. He commended the state’s investment in education as a key driver for innovation.
A key highlight of the event was an interactive panel session where students engaged in discussions with the Deputy Governor on issues affecting STEAM education, including inclusivity, technology-driven learning, and entrepreneurship in schools.
The Lagos State Government reaffirmed its dedication to providing the necessary resources and mentorship to nurture the next generation of innovators.
