Imperial College London has recently announced a new scholarship programme for PhD students from sub-Saharan Africa who will be joining the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering. The initiative is made possible by an endowed gift from the late Professor Shawki Saad, a Professor of Civil Engineering at Khartoum University in Sudan, and will fully cover tuition fees, provide a stipend, and cover travel costs for four students.
The scholarship programme, which builds on a previous scholarship for students from Sudan, aims to support rising stars in engineering and strengthen college links with sub-Saharan Africa. It also includes a student prize for sustainability-related research in sub-Saharan Africa tagged ‘Africa Plus Annual Prize’ of $500 for the best Civil and Environmental Engineering MEng student project which will be awarded for at least the next 5 years. The prize is funded by Africa Plus Partners, an asset management company.
The scholarship is open to research projects in various areas, including Transport, Fluid Mechanics, Environmental and Water Resources, Structures, Systems, Materials, and Geotechnics.
Professor Washington Yotto Ochieng, Head of the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering, expressed his gratitude for the generous support from the Professor Shawki Saad Endowment Fund and Africa Plus Partners, stating that this scholarship will help to nurture and develop the next generation of engineering leaders. He emphasized that engineering research is crucial to solving some of the world’s most pressing challenges, especially in sustainable transport and water security, and that sub-Saharan Africa needs a pipeline of skilled young engineers who can make a vital impact on society.
This scholarship programme underscores Imperial College London’s commitment to tackling global systemic challenges in engineering and sustainability by supporting students from sub-Saharan Africa in their pursuit of higher education.
