The Wole Soyinka Centre for Investigative Journalism (WSCIJ), in partnership with the Centre for Journalism Innovation and Development (CJID) and supported by the Netherlands Embassy, is hosting the 2024 Masterclass on Holistic Safety for Investigative Reporters. The programme, part of the #CivicSpaceGuard project, aims to provide investigative journalists with essential skills to ensure their safety while conducting critical reporting.

The masterclass, held at the Park Inn by Radisson in Abeokuta, runs from 2 to 5 September 2024 and brings together seasoned professionals and investigative journalists to explore topics such as digital security, risk management, mental health, and legal protection.

Motunrayo Alaka, Executive Director and CEO of the WSCIJ, highlighted the importance of accurate reporting to avoid legal risks. Speaking at the event, she stressed that evidence-based journalism is vital in defending against libel claims. Alaka noted that while caution is necessary, factual reporting remains a journalist’s strongest defence.

Dapo Olorunyomi, publisher of *Premium Times* and founder of the WSCIJ, emphasised the need for thorough research and preparation to protect journalists from harm. He spoke on the importance of understanding the political and cultural climate of regions being reported on, learning from past incidents involving journalists, and implementing safety protocols to reduce risks. Olorunyomi also encouraged journalists to assess vulnerabilities in their teams, including training gaps, experience levels, and cyber security preparedness.

On the topic of journalistic ethics, Olorunyomi remarked: “Every profession is defined by its ethics, not by the length of its training. A professional journalist is one who adheres to the ethical standards of journalism.” He added that ethical reporting is crucial in building public trust and creating an informed society.

Yushau Shuaib, publisher of *PR Nigeria*, underscored the importance of seeking legal advice to protect against lawsuits. He also emphasised the need for journalists to uphold accuracy and responsibility in their work. “Responsible journalism builds trust, credibility, and public understanding, contributing to a well-informed citizenry,” Shuaib said, urging attendees to adhere to professional codes and consult legal experts when necessary.

Mallami Alli, Managing Editor of *The Nation*’s Northern Operations, conducted a session on digital security risks, such as phishing, disinformation, and smear campaigns. His presentation provided journalists with practical strategies for safeguarding against cyber threats, including the use of secure communication tools and robust cybersecurity practices.

Yusuf Alli, Editor of *The Nation*, reflected on the dangers investigative journalists face and reassured participants not to fear libel suits. “To win a libel case, the accuser must prove their integrity and that the claims made are false,” he said. However, he cautioned journalists to balance bold reporting with legal caution.

The training also addressed the violence and intimidation faced by journalists in Nigeria. During the 2023 general elections, at least 28 journalists were unlawfully detained, harassed, or intimidated, while 56 were attacked during the #EndBadGovernance protests. These incidents highlight the urgent need for safety training like that provided in this masterclass.

Participants, including 18 investigative reporters from across Nigeria, praised the sessions for offering practical safety tools. As the workshop continues, Fowardthrust, Principal Partner at The Pedagogy Hub, led a discussion on how participants can pass on the knowledge and skills gained from the masterclass to their teams, advocating for step-down training strategies to reinforce learning.
