In a dazzling ceremony held at the Marriott Hotel in Ikeja on September 30, 2024, Mrs. Anike Adekanye, the Tutor General and Permanent Secretary of Education District 2, Maryland, received the Governor’s Commendation for Institutional Excellence, acknowledging her district as the Most Outstanding Education District in Lagos State.

This esteemed recognition highlights Adekanye’s unwavering dedication to the development of children and her pioneering efforts in implementing Gender-Based Violence (GBV) awareness programs in her district. As the event unfolded, Adekanye took a moment to express her heartfelt gratitude, stating, “Serving under the Governor’s vision-driven administration is both a privilege and an inspiration that propels my passion to elevate the standards of education in Education District 2 and contribute to the holistic growth of students across Lagos.”

Governor Babajide Olusola Sanwo-Olu, alongside his wife, Dr. Claudiana Ibijoke Sanwo-Olu, was commended for their exemplary leadership and commitment to advancing education in Lagos State. Adekanye also recognized the Deputy Governor, Dr. Kadri Obafemi Hamzat, and his wife, Mrs. Oluremi Hamzat, for their significant contributions to educational development.

Adekanye further praised Mr. Olabode Agoro, the Head of Service of Lagos State, calling him “the leader of leaders” and a source of inspiration. The event underscored the collaborative spirit within Lagos’s educational framework, as Adekanye credited the Honourable Commissioner for Basic and Secondary Education, Mr. Jamiu Tolani Alli-Balogun, for his support in achieving the district’s milestones.

Reflecting on her transformative journey, Adekanye highlighted her commitment to improving both human resources and infrastructure, resulting in enhanced student and staff performance. Under her leadership, Education District 2 has produced remarkable achievements, including three one-day Governors and two one-day Deputy Governors of Lagos State, along with numerous awards for teachers and administrators.

“Thanks to the collaborative efforts of our entire district team, we are ensuring the protection and welfare of children in our schools,” Adekanye emphasized. Her visionary approach and steadfast resolve have positioned her as a key player in the fight against societal challenges, particularly in safeguarding students from domestic and sexual violence.

As the night concluded, the recognition of Adekanye served not only as an acknowledgment of her accomplishments but also as a call to action for educators across the state to continue striving for excellence in the pursuit of a safer, more equitable educational landscape.
