The Lagos State Police Command has committed to ensuring top-notch security for the upcoming 11th All Africa University Games (FASU), to be co-hosted by the University of Lagos (UNILAG), Akoka, and the Lagos State University (LASU), Ojo.
The event, set to take place in September, will bring together over 3,000 students and officials from universities across Africa.
This marks the second time Nigeria will host the prestigious event, which will feature a diverse array of sports including athletics, badminton, chess, judo, table tennis, karate, taekwondo, swimming, basketball, football, volleyball, and handball.
During a recent visit to the Lagos State Police Headquarters in Ikeja, LASU Vice-Chancellor, Professor Ibiyemi Olatunji-Bello, led her team to meet with the newly appointed Lagos Police Commissioner, Fayoade Adegoke Mustapha.
Mustapha assured the delegation of the police force’s readiness to provide comprehensive security for all participants.
“Our primary responsibility is to ensure the safety and security of everyone involved. Athletes from across Africa must leave with positive experiences that reflect well on our country,” stated Mustapha.
He emphasised the critical role of the police in fostering a secure environment for the games and promised active involvement in the event’s security operations.
Professor Olatunji-Bello congratulated Commissioner Mustapha on his new role, expressing confidence in his leadership, especially given his status as a LASU alumnus.
She highlighted the recent peace enjoyed by LASU and sought continued support to maintain this stability, particularly during the FASU Games.
“Our prayer is for a successful event that will be memorable for all participants from across the African continent,” Professor Olatunji-Bello remarked, underscoring the importance of adequate security measures for the event’s success.
The collaboration between the Lagos State Police and the host universities aims to ensure a seamless and secure experience for all involved, further enhancing Nigeria’s reputation as a capable host of major international sporting events.
