The Lagos State Government has approved the demands of the Joint Action Committee (JAC) of University Staff Unions at Lagos State University (LASU), resolving the strike action that began on December 6, 2024.
The unions, comprising ASUU, SSANU, NASU, and NAAT, had submitted their requests through university management for state intervention.
The Lagos State Executive Council (EXCO), after reviewing recommendations from the Steering Committee, approved key measures to address the unions’ demands. These include an increase in subvention, where the state government will cover half of the N209.8 million shortfall in wage increments for both academic and non-academic staff. Additionally, a monthly sum of N104.9 million will now be added to LASU’s subvention.
“The approval by the Lagos State Government represents a significant commitment to the welfare of our staff. By covering half of the wage increment shortfall and increasing the subvention, we are ensuring that our university continues to grow and thrive,” said a representative of the Lagos State Government.
The government also incorporated a new salary structure that harmonizes salaries across the state’s three universities. The updates include a 25-35% salary increase, salary harmonization for academic and non-academic staff, and the inclusion of the new minimum wage.
“The harmonization of salaries and the inclusion of the new minimum wage are steps in the right direction,” said a member of the Joint Action Committee. “This will greatly benefit both academic and non-academic staff, and we appreciate the state government for acting swiftly to address our concerns.”
In response, the university management expressed gratitude to the Lagos State Government for its swift resolution of the strike and its commitment to staff welfare. “We thank the Lagos State Government for its timely intervention, which ensures the continued growth and development of LASU,” said the university’s spokesperson.
