The Lagos State government has urged 1,000 newly recruited teachers to commit fully to their roles, aiming to enhance the quality of education in the state. This call to action was made by Mrs. Victoria Peregrino, Chairman of the Teaching Service Commission (TESCOM), during the opening session of a four-day induction program.
The new recruits, primarily fresh graduates with a focus on STEM subjects, are set to replace outgoing teachers across secondary schools in the state’s six educational districts. The induction program, held simultaneously in Ikeja, Oshodi, and Ikorodu, emphasizes the theme “Empowering Educators for Outstanding Learner Performance.”
In her keynote address at the Ikeja center, Peregrino highlighted the government’s high expectations for the new teachers, stressing the importance of technical proficiency and adherence to 21st-century best practices. She noted that the program, a tradition since TESCOM’s inception in 2019, aims to align with the state’s goal of providing quality education that equips students with the skills needed for global competitiveness.
Peregrino also encouraged the new teachers to aspire to higher positions within the teaching service, including roles such as tutor-general or permanent secretary, based on their performance. She expressed gratitude to Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu for his continued support of the teaching profession, which includes rewarding exceptional teachers with valuable gifts like houses and cars.
Permanent Secretary of the commission, Mrs. Iyabo Seriki-Bello, echoed these sentiments in her welcome address, urging the inductees to use their expertise to produce future-ready students. She emphasized that the new teachers were selected through a rigorous process and are expected to demonstrate a passion for their profession.
The induction program aims to prepare the new teachers to contribute significantly to a productive educational system, ensuring that learners receive life-transforming instruction and guidance. This initiative is seen as crucial for the socio-economic prosperity of Lagos State, ensuring its students can compete favorably on a global stage.
