The Lagos State University (LASU) held its matriculation ceremony for the 2023/2024 academic session, officially welcoming 12,873 new students.

The Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Ibiyemi Olatunji-Bello, shared this milestone during the ceremony, emphasizing the university’s commitment to being student-centered and fostering the development of future leaders.

The event, which took place at the Ojo campus in Lagos, witnessed Prof. Adenike Boyo, the Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Administration), representing Prof. Olatunji-Bello. Notably, LASU experienced an overwhelming response with over 50,000 applicants vying for admission, showcasing the university’s popularity and demand for quality education.

Addressing the matriculating students, Olatunji-Bello urged them to prioritize their studies, emphasizing the immense opportunity they have to receive a university education. She highlighted LASU’s objective to produce graduates who would contribute significantly to the transformation of Lagos State into a greater entity.

The VC also announced the university’s commitment to creating a safe and respectful environment by emphasizing a zero-tolerance policy towards sexual and gender-based violence.

The establishment of the Directorate of Response and Preventive of Sexual and Gender-based Violence was mentioned as a proactive step to address such issues.

In her words, Olatunji-Bello encouraged students to speak out against any form of harassment or assault, reinforcing the importance of reporting incidents promptly. She emphasized that LASU aims to provide a conducive and productive environment for all students, requiring respect for colleagues and university staff.

Abiodun Fatai-Abatan, the Dean of the Students’ Affairs Division, echoed these sentiments during the ceremony. He urged the new students to reject anti-social behaviors such as bullying, assaults, violence, cultism, examination malpractice, indecent dressing, and sexual harassment both within and outside the campus.

With the record-breaking number of matriculated students and LASU’s commitment to a safe and inclusive academic environment, the 2023/2024 academic session appears poised for success, promising a new generation of graduates ready to contribute positively to society.
