Lagos State University (LASU), Ojo, witnessed a complete shutdown on Monday as academic and non-academic staff embarked on an indefinite strike.

The strike, led by LASU chapters of ASUU, SSANU, NASU, and NAAT, demands that the Lagos State Government address salary disparities and fulfill its promised 20% salary increase made during Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu’s election campaign.

Justice Obafemi, NASU-LASU chairman, lamented, “They used us, and in spite of our active contributions… they have not fulfilled their promise.” He added that LASU staff salaries lag behind those of Adeniran Ogunsanya College of Education and Lagos State Polytechnic, despite their conversion to universities.

Ibrahim Bakare, ASUU-LASU chairman, stressed, “The action is an agitation for staff welfare… We will remain calm for the government to address our demands.” SSANU-LASU chairman, Seyi Lawal, accused the government of stalling negotiations: “We want the government to address these demands first.”

In response, LASU declared a break from December 9, 2024, to January 5, 2025, urging students to vacate hostels within 48 hours. University activities are set to resume on January 6, 2025.
