A widespread viral eye infection has prompted the closure of approximately 56,000 schools across Pakistan’s most populous province, Punjab.
The outbreak of conjunctivitis, commonly known as pinkeye, has affected nearly 100,000 individuals, leading to urgent measures being taken by regional authorities.
According to Jamal Nasir, the Health Minister of Punjab, the situation escalated rapidly, necessitating the closure of primary and secondary schools until the upcoming Monday.
This drastic step is aimed at curbing the further spread of the infection.
The viral eye infection, conjunctivitis, is highly contagious and characterised by redness and irritation of the eyes.
It can be transmitted through physical contact, leading authorities to urge the public to limit interactions and stay indoors to minimise the risk of transmission.
Punjab’s Chief Minister, Mohsin Naqvi, has assured the public that the local government will provide comprehensive guidelines before the schools reopen on Monday.
These guidelines will focus on preventing students from contracting the infection and ensuring the safety of all educational institutions.
The outbreak has raised concerns among parents, students, and the wider community, highlighting the importance of swift and coordinated efforts to contain the spread of contagious diseases.
Authorities are closely monitoring the situation, with the hope that these measures will help bring the outbreak under control and allow students to return to their schools without further health risks.
