Meet Dr. Morufu Olatunji, the new Minister of Education

Dr. Morufu Olatunji is a Nigerian politician, medical doctor, and public servant. He was appointed on October 24, 2024 replacing Prof. Tahir Mamman. His appointment comes at a time when Nigeria’s educational sector faces significant challenges, including inadequate infrastructure, teacher shortages, and low literacy rates, especially in the northern parts of the country. Dr. Morufu’s background in both medicine and public service makes him a unique candidate to address these issues from a multifaceted perspective. On 21 August 2023 he was appointed Minister of State for Education in the Cabinet of Bola Tinubuand has now become the Minister of Education.

Dr. Morufu Olatunji Alausa is a seasoned nephrologist and healthcare professional with over three decades of experience in internal medicine, particularly nephrology. Mr Alausa, from Epe, Lagos State, is a personal physician to President Tinubu. He is highly regarded for his contributions to the treatment of chronic kidney disease and healthcare services, especially in underserved communities. Dr. Alausa completed his medical education in 1993 and has since earned recognition for his expertise, being named one of America’s Best Physicians in 2007 and 2012.

Throughout his career, Dr. Alausa has been actively involved in various medical missions, particularly through the Eko Club International Medical mission, where he has led efforts from the U.S. to Lagos, Nigeria. He is also deeply connected with the Nigerian diaspora in Chicago, notably as a member of Lagosians of Chicago. His philanthropic and professional work includes leading several healthcare initiatives and providing critical medical services to communities in need.

In 2023, Dr. Alausa was appointed as the Minister of State for Health and Social Welfare in Nigeria by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu. This role entrusts him with significant responsibilities, including addressing the healthcare challenges in Nigeria and implementing policies to improve the nation’s health and social welfare system. His hardworking during his tenure positioned him for this new task as he has been actively involved in the decisions around the education sector behind the scenes since the new administration appointed him as the Minister of State for Health. After his appointment, many has described him as a great replacement for his predecessor, Prof Tahir Mamman.
