The National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) Southwest Zone D has strongly condemned the recent unlawful invasion and arrest of over 80 students at Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU) in Ile-Ife by operatives of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC). The incident, which occurred in the early hours of the morning, has ignited outrage and fear among the student community.

NANS Southwest Zone D expressed deep concern and condemned the blatant disregard for the rights and dignity of the students, who were picked up from their hostel at 4 a.m. The organization labeled the actions of the law enforcement agencies as unacceptable, unconstitutional, and a direct attack on the right to education and the pursuit of knowledge.

The student body demanded an immediate and thorough investigation into the incident, urging that those responsible for the intrusion be held accountable for their actions. NANS Southwest Zone D vowed to stand in solidarity with the students of OAU and take all necessary measures to ensure justice is served.

Furthermore, NANS Southwest Zone D called upon the EFCC and all relevant authorities to respect the autonomy of educational campuses, adhere to due process, and conduct their operations within the bounds of the law. The organization emphasized that campuses should remain safe havens for learning, where students can pursue their education without fear of arbitrary arrests or intimidation.

Students were urged to remain vigilant and report any instances of illegal activities on their campuses. NANS Southwest Zone D affirmed its commitment to closely monitor the situation and advocate for the rights and well-being of fellow students.

The statement was signed by prominent NANS representatives, including Comrade Alao John, Coordinator of NANS Southwest; Comrade Sanni Sulaimon Olamide, Secretary General of NANS Southwest; and Comrade Bamigboye Peter Oluwadamilola (Dammygold), Public Relations Officer of NANS Southwest.

The incident has sparked widespread concern and calls for justice, with many demanding accountability and an end to actions that threaten the peace and stability of educational institutions in the country. As investigations unfold, the student community, along with NANS Southwest Zone D, remains vigilant, united, and determined to ensure justice prevails.
