A new partnership between Unveiling Africa Foundation (UVA), and Children in Freedom School (CIFS), Nakuru, Kenya has established the Family Roots Project to promote African culture and languages in educational institutions.

UVA is a leader in advocating for the celebration and promotion of African heritage, languages, and traditions in educational settings. This will celebrate the shared heritage of Africans and people of African descent.

The Family Roots Project aims to unite people from various backgrounds to explore and record their family histories, forming a collection of narratives that mirror the diverse range of human experiences.

This joint effort between UVA and CIFS will enable students to strengthen ties with their heritage, promoting a deeper sense of connection and comprehension within the worldwide community. They can achieve this by tracing their lineage through creating a family tree or a personal profile that can be shared and cherished across generations as an heirloom.

“We are thrilled to partner with CIFS on the launch of the Family Roots Project,” said Chizoba Imoka-Ubochioma, founder of Unveiling Africa Foundation. “At (UVA), we hold the conviction that acknowledging and embracing our origins are fundamental in nurturing a shared sense of identity, inclusivity, and interconnectedness among our communities. This partnership endeavours to inaugurate a consciousness of personal history and African-centered outlook in the learners at CIFS.”

Participants in this programme will be provided with resources and tools to support them in their genealogical exploration, ranging from research questions to expert assistance. Workshops and seminars that will allow participants to exchange discoveries would be organised. Community events and gatherings to share stories, traditions, and experiences and Online forums and discussion groups for connecting with others on a similar journey would be put in place.

“We are excited to join forces with the Unveiling Africa Foundation on this important initiative,” said Oku Kanayo, founder and director at CIFS, Nakuru, Kenya. “The Family Roots Project embodies our shared mission and vision to preserve and celebrate our cultural heritage and ensure that our learners have the opportunity to connect with their roots and understand their place in the world.”
