Nigeria senate greenlights Student Loans Bill

The Student Loans (Access to Higher Education) Act (Repeal and Re-Enactment) Bill, 2024, has cleared a crucial hurdle in Nigeria’s legislative process with its successful passage by the Senate.

Spearheaded by Senator Muntari Dandutse, the Chairman of the Senate Committee on Tertiary Institutions and TETFUND, the bill underwent meticulous examination during plenary sessions.

President Bola Tinubu’s recent submission of the bill to the National Assembly set the stage for its comprehensive review and approval.

Recognizing the importance of facilitating swift action, the Senate expedited proceedings by temporarily setting aside relevant sections of its standing rules.

Subsequently, the bill was referred to the Committee of the Whole for thorough evaluation.

Following vigorous debates and deliberations, Senate President Godswill Akpabio entrusted the bill to the Senate Committee on Tertiary Institutions and TETFUND for further refinement.

With a mandate to conduct in-depth analysis, the committee is tasked with presenting its findings within a week.

Central to the bill’s objectives is the establishment of the Nigerian Education Loan Fund, aimed at providing interest-free loans to economically disadvantaged Nigerians seeking higher education opportunities.
