The National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) has taken a decisive action in Sokoto, extending the service period of three members due to absconding and misconduct.

This development was disclosed by the NYSC coordinator in Sokoto, Usman Yakubu-Yaro, during the certificate issuance ceremony for the 2023 Batch ‘A’ Stream 2 youth corps members on Thursday.

Yakubu-Yaro emphasized the NYSC’s zero-tolerance policy towards truancy and misconduct, reiterating the organization’s commitment to discipline erring corps members. Out of the 618 youth corps members who completed the mandatory one-year service, 351 were males and 267 were females. Notably, these individuals demonstrated commendable character throughout their service year.

Both male and female corps members have been recognized for their outstanding contributions to the development of Sokoto State during their service year. They have been shortlisted for the prestigious Sultan of Sokoto Meritorious Award, underscoring their significant impact on the state’s progress.

The coordinator highlighted the NYSC’s strategic deployment of corps members, particularly in educational institutions and rural medical facilities, where their services are most needed. He urged outgoing corps members to uphold the values of the NYSC and leverage the skills acquired during their service year.

He advised them to explore diverse opportunities beyond traditional employment, acknowledging the challenges in securing white-collar jobs.

He stated that the decision to extend the service year of the three members sends a clear message about commitment to discipline and accountability.
