Oando Foundation, in collaboration with Sumitomo Chemical, Lagos and Plateau State Universal Basic Education Boards, and GreenHubAfrica, has marked a significant milestone in environmental advocacy with the successful implementation of its Clean Our World project.
This initiative has reached over 69,500 pupils across 70 public primary schools in Lagos and Plateau States, promoting environmental education and sustainable practices.
The Clean Our World initiative addresses Nigeria’s waste management challenges, particularly its annual generation of 32 million tonnes of solid waste, 2.5 million tonnes of which is plastic.
By focusing on integrating environmental education into public schools and communities, the project aligns with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goal 4.7, which emphasises education for sustainable development and climate action.
At the COW project close-out ceremony in Lagos Programmes Manager at Oando Foundation, , Tonia Uduimoh, mentioned the initiative’s impact, “This project empowers young Nigerians to become climate champions by providing the knowledge and tools needed to address pressing environmental challenges such as plastic pollution and urban flooding. By fostering a culture of sustainability, we are shaping a generation equipped to make a difference.”
Building on the success of previous phases in Lagos, the initiative expanded to Plateau State this year, marking its first phase in the region.
Pupils in both states participated in activities focused on waste management, recycling, sanitation, and sustainable practices. Teachers also received specialised training and instructional materials, enabling them to effectively deliver environmental education and inspire their students.
Board Secretary of Lagos State Universal Basic Education Board, Mr Hakeem Lamidi, commended the Foundation, stating, “The Clean Our World project aligns with our state’s goals for environmental sustainability. It has not only improved our environment but also inspired a generation of environmentally conscious learners. LASUBEB remains committed to supporting initiatives like this to foster a cleaner and greener future.”
Head Teacher of Awoyaya Nursery and Primary School, Okeshina Deborah, expressed gratitude for the program, “This initiative has expanded our understanding of sustainability and provided income-generating opportunities through recycling. We deeply appreciate Oando Foundation’s dedication to building a sustainable future for our pupils and teachers.”
