Peter Obi, leader of the Labour Party and former presidential candidate, has announced a commitment of N120 million over two years to support the initiatives of the Holy Rosary Sisters. This announcement came during a significant celebration marking the centenary of the sisters’ unwavering dedication to education and healthcare in the country.
“Today, Sunday, I had the honor of worshipping with the students of Holy Rosary College, Nsugbe, in celebration of their 10th anniversary—an important milestone for a school I had the privilege of laying the foundation for in 2013,” Obi stated on his social media platform, X. This event coincided with the sisters’ centenary, which commemorates 100 years of their impactful work initiated by Bishop Joseph Shanahan in 1924.
Obi participated in a Mass at the Basilica of the Most Holy Trinity in Onitsha, where he reflected on the sisters’ transformative mission, emphasizing the profound impact they have had on countless lives. “Their century-long mission has transformed countless lives, and I encouraged them to continue their invaluable work, especially in the areas of education, healthcare, and poverty alleviation,” he said.
The financial commitment includes N100 million earmarked for the sisters’ headquarters in Enugu, directed towards educational, healthcare, and humanitarian projects, including new facilities being constructed in Nsukka. An additional N20 million is allocated specifically for Holy Rosary College, Nsugbe, intended to fulfill a previous pledge made during Obi’s governorship, which was rescinded by the succeeding administration.
“My commitment to education during my governorship remains unwavering, and this pledge reflects my belief that these sectors are vital to our nation’s development and require continuous investment and support,” Obi asserted. He further urged the Holy Rosary Sisters to persist in their mission of serving Nigerians without discrimination, emphasizing the power of discipline, service, and unity in fostering a better society.
Obi’s pledge not only underscores the importance of educational and healthcare initiatives but also serves as a call to action for continuous support in these crucial sectors, pivotal for Nigeria’s growth and development.
