In an unfortunate incident on Tuesday morning, approximately 20 students of Fakunle Government Secondary School in Osogbo, Osun State, were rushed to the hospital due to exposure to teargas smoke. The incident occurred as a result of a misdirected teargas canister fired by mobile policemen stationed near the school.

Fakunle Government Secondary School, located adjacent to the Osogbo city stadium along Ikirun road, found itself enveloped in teargas smoke when the mobile policemen discharged teargas as part of their routine procedure. The smoke from the explosion inadvertently made its way into the school premises.

The effects of the teargas were particularly severe for some students, causing them to faint. Prompt action was taken, and these affected students were swiftly transported to a nearby private hospital. However, due to the number of casualties, the available facilities at the private hospital were overwhelmed, necessitating the transfer of the remaining affected students to the teaching hospital at the Osun State University (Uniosun).

As soon as the school authorities became aware of the escalating situation and the unbearable levels of smoke within the premises, they promptly ordered the immediate closure of the school. The incident caused panic among the students and staff, resulting in a rapid evacuation of the school premises. Consequently, attempts to reach the school principal for comment were unsuccessful, as the premises were deserted shortly after the incident.

In response to the incident, Yemisi Opalola, the spokesperson for the Osun State Police Command, expressed unawareness of the incident. However, she assured the public that she would investigate the alleged shooting of teargas and determine the reasons behind it.

The incident at Fakunle Government Secondary School has raised concerns regarding the safety of students and the need for enhanced coordination between law enforcement agencies and educational institutions to prevent such incidents in the future. The affected students are currently receiving medical attention, and their families are eagerly awaiting updates on their condition.

The incident serves as a reminder of the importance of maintaining a safe and secure environment within and around educational institutions, ensuring the well-being of students and promoting a conducive atmosphere for learning.
