The Public Relations Officer of the Gombe Police Command, DSP Buhari Abdullahi, has confirmed that a canister, also known as tear gas, was fired at Gombe State University students
It was gathered that the final year students had on Tuesday embarked on a “back-to-school” celebration which is part of activities to commemorate their week-long activities when an unknown person fired the canister and substance suspected to be a tear gas.
Mo fewer than 20 students who were mainly females were affected following their medical conditions suspected to be asthma.
Our correspondent reports that the management had allegedly suspended the week-long final celebration to low-key to mitigate further consequences.
Confirming the incident, Abdullahi said, “The incident is under investigation to ascertain the actual cause of the situation as no suspicious object was seen/discovered during the scene analysis by the detectives.”
He continued, “However, all the victims are female, and all were treated and discharged from the hospital and school clinic. No causality was recorded.
“Meanwhile, efforts are on the way to ascertain the root cause of the entire incident,” the top cop assured.
