The Senate has passed for second reading a bill proposing the establishment of the Federal University of Science and Technology, Okorokorisei, in Bayelsa State. The institution, if approved, will specialize in teaching and research in science, technology, and innovation.
Presenting the bill during Tuesday’s plenary, the sponsor, Benson Friday (PDP-Bayelsa), emphasized the university’s potential to serve not only Bayelsa but the entire nation. He described the proposed institution as a crucial driver of Nigeria’s modern economy.
“The university will train young men and women, and older Nigerians, in science and technology. Education remains the driver of the modern economy, and this institution will equip Nigerians with skills to thrive,” Mr. Friday stated.
He highlighted the university’s focus on disciplines tailored to the region, including Marine Engineering and Petroleum Studies, while also meeting broader national educational needs.
Backing the motion, Seriake Dickson (PDP-Bayelsa) described the initiative as an additional investment in the country’s education sector. He called on lawmakers to support the establishment, emphasizing its importance to Bayelsa and the broader national landscape.
“There is a need for additional investment in education, and this institution will play a significant role in addressing gaps in manpower development,” he said.
Senate President Godswill Akpabio referred the bill to the Committee on Tertiary Institutions and TETFund for further legislative work. The committee is expected to return its report in four weeks.
The proposed Federal University of Science and Technology is envisioned as a center for innovation, equipping Nigerians with the expertise needed to meet the demands of the global economy. As the legislative process continues, hopes are high that the institution will significantly enhance educational opportunities in Bayelsa and beyond.
