Spotlight: Afe Babalola, The visionary legal luminary transforming Nigeria’s educational landscape

He was the Pro-Chancellor and Chairman of the Governing Council of the University of Lagos from 2001-2007 and one time Chairman of the Committee of Pro-Chancellors of Nigerian Universities. Aare Afe Babalola is the founder of Afe Babalola University, Ado-Ekiti, Ekiti State (ABUAD). He is a traditional chief and a holder of the prestigious national honours of the Officer of the Federal Republic (OFR) and Commander of the Order of the Niger (CON).

Aare Afe Babalola was born on October 30, 1929, in Ado-Ekiti, Ekiti State, Nigeria. He grew up in a modest household with little access to formal education. Despite these humble beginnings, Babalola was determined to pursue knowledge. He initially worked as a farmer, trader, and teacher before deciding to further his education. Much of his early education was self-taught, as he passed key academic exams through private study. His journey is a story of self-determination and resilience.

He later enrolled in higher education, earning a degree in economics from the University of London through its external study program. He then pursued law and was called to the English Bar in 1963, setting the stage for a remarkable legal career.

Afe Babalola’s legal career is one of the most illustrious in Nigeria. After his call to the Nigerian Bar in 1963, he quickly gained prominence for his expertise in legal matters and his ability to navigate complex cases. He founded Afe Babalola & Co. (Emmanuel Chambers) in 1965, which became one of the leading law firms in Nigeria. His firm has mentored and produced numerous Senior Advocates of Nigeria (SAN) and judges.

In 1987, he was conferred the title of Senior Advocate of Nigeria (SAN), the highest legal honour awarded to practicing lawyers in Nigeria. His legal expertise saw him representing high-profile clients and handling landmark cases that have influenced Nigeria’s legal system.

Babalola’s reputation as a skilled legal mind led him to be appointed as the Pro-Chancellor of the University of Lagos from 2001 to 2007. During his tenure, he introduced critical reforms, improving the university’s financial and academic standing. His leadership earned him the award of Best Pro-Chancellor by the Nigerian Universities Commission (NUC).

Afe Babalola’s greatest legacy in education is the establishment of Afe Babalola University, Ado-Ekiti (ABUAD) in 2009. After witnessing the challenges and gaps in Nigeria’s educational sector, he was determined to provide a model university that would set a high standard for academic excellence. ABUAD was founded with a vision to produce graduates who would not only excel in academics but also be ethical and solution-driven leaders.

The university, which started with just 240 students, has grown into one of Nigeria’s most prestigious private universities, with thousands of students enrolled across various disciplines. ABUAD is known for its state-of-the-art facilities, top-tier academic staff, and innovative programs. It offers degrees in fields such as Medicine, Engineering, Law, Agriculture, and Management Sciences.

Babalola’s vision for ABUAD goes beyond academic learning; it is a center for research, entrepreneurship, and leadership development. The university operates an entrepreneurial center that equips students with skills to create jobs, rather than just seeking employment. ABUAD’s law faculty is consistently ranked among the best in Nigeria, a testament to Babalola’s dedication to both education and legal reform.

Afe Babalola has been a tireless advocate for education reform in Nigeria. He believes in the power of education to transform societies and has continuously called for improvements in Nigeria’s public and private educational institutions. Through his leadership and vision at ABUAD, he has demonstrated how private institutions can lead the charge in offering world-class education in Africa.

His contributions to education have earned him numerous awards and recognition. In 2013, he received the African Leadership Award in Education for his role in advancing education in Africa. Babalola’s influence also extends internationally; he has been recognised by global organisations for his efforts in promoting quality education and legal standards.

Beyond education and law, Afe Babalola is a noted philanthropist. His charitable activities focus primarily on education, healthcare, and poverty alleviation. Through the Afe Babalola Foundation, he provides scholarships to students, supports healthcare initiatives, and helps underprivileged communities.

One of his major projects is the Afe Babalola Multi-System Hospital at ABUAD, a world-class medical facility that serves not just the university but also the entire Ekiti State and beyond. The hospital is equipped with cutting-edge technology and highly skilled personnel, providing affordable healthcare services to the community.

Aare Afe Babalola holds the traditional title of Aare Bamofin of Yorubaland, recognising his contributions to the legal profession and his influence in the Yoruba community. His leadership extends beyond his professional work, as he is seen as a role model for ethical leadership, integrity, and self-discipline.

Throughout his life, Babalola has emphasised the importance of ethics and hard work. His personal story, rising from poverty to becoming one of Nigeria’s most influential figures, serves as an inspiration to many. His commitment to education, legal reforms, and philanthropy has left an indelible mark on Nigeria’s development.

Aare Afe Babalola’s contributions to law and education in Nigeria are immeasurable. His establishment of Afe Babalola University has raised the bar for private education in Nigeria, offering a model for institutions across Africa. His legal career and advocacy for reform have left a lasting impact on the Nigerian legal system, while his philanthropy continues to benefit communities across the country.

An advocate par excellence, Aare Afe Babalola has made outstanding contributions to the development of Nigerian Law and Jurisprudence through advocacy in Court. This is evident from the celebrated cases which he has handled and the notable personalities and corporate bodies who constitute his clientele.

He has to his credit several legal books, namely, Injunctions and Enforcement of Orders; Law and Practice of Evidence in Nigeria; (Ed.); Enforcement of Judgments; and Election Law and Practice, etc. All of which have contributed immensely to the promotion of legal education and practice in Nigeria.

He has also authored over 200 legal and non-legal articles contained in law books and journals some of which works he had delivered as lectures at various events. Aare Afe Babalola is a Lecturer at the Nigerian Institute of Advanced Legal Studies, visiting lecturer at the Post-graduate Schools of the University of Lagos and the University of Ibadan, as well as the Centre for African Law and Development Studies.

He is also the author of “YOU AND THE LAW”, a column published by the Nigerian Tribune Newspaper on Mondays. A Patron of several law student societies, legal institutions and corporate bodies, Aare Afe Babalola has trained over 300 lawyers and produced 14 Senior Advocates of Nigeria (the largest number from any Chambers in the Country), several judges and Attorneys-General.

His experience and number of years in uninterrupted legal practice have equipped him with versatility in many areas of law.

He is a consultant to several conglomerates, the Federal Government of Nigeria, companies and the World Bank. Aare Afe Babalola is an administrator of repute and is actively involved in both domestic and international arbitration.

Aare Afe Babalola owns a huge law library and is strongly devoted to the advancement of law and the legal profession in Nigeria. He won the African Award in Education 2011, African Man of the Year in Food Security, 2014. He was conferred with the Congressional Commendation of the US Georgia Legislative Black Caucus and inducted into the African Hall of Fame by the Advisory Board of the African Leadership Development Foundation, Inc. USA, and African Leadership (UK) Limited in 2016.

A true embodiment of self-determination and visionary leadership, Afe Babalola’s legacy will continue to inspire generations to come. He is not only a symbol of excellence in law and education but also a tireless advocate for a better, more educated, and just society.
