In a compelling address during the 29th and 30th combined convocation ceremony of the University of Uyo, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu emphasized the critical role of education as the foundation for national development.
Stressing the need for a responsive and transformative education system, he asserted that such a system is crucial for Nigeria’s accelerated development.
Represented by Professor Owunari Abraham Georgewill, Vice Chancellor of the University of Port Harcourt, President Tinubu acknowledged the nation’s challenges and reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to overcoming these obstacles.
“Education must be responsive and transformative for accelerated development,” he stated, underscoring the government’s resolve to mitigate the impact of these challenges, particularly on the vulnerable segments of society.
The ceremony was also an occasion to honour Akwa Ibom State Governor, Pastor Umo Eno, who received a Doctorate Degree (Ph.D) in Public Administration. In an emotional tribute to his late wife, Pastor Patience Umo Eno, Governor Eno reflected on her pivotal role in his academic journey.
“I remember when I met her in the hospital a week before she passed on, and she told me, ‘Please don’t fail to go and complete your program, and I will be there with you during your graduation.’ Today, even though she is not physically here, I can feel her presence through our children who are here,” he shared.
Governor Eno described his academic achievement as a testament to perseverance and faith, aligning it with his vision for a people-centric government under the ARISE Agenda. This includes initiatives like the free food voucher scheme, compassionate homes, world-class primary health centers, and free and compulsory education programs.
Commending President Tinubu’s dedication to economic growth, Governor Eno rallied support for the Tinubu-led Federal Government, expressing optimism about its economic policies despite current challenges. He lauded the efforts of the Minister of Education, Dr. Murufu Olatunji Alausa, and university officials for elevating the University of Uyo’s status.
Governor Eno extended gratitude to his academic supervisor, Professor Basil Onuoha, and other lecturers, pledging continued commitment to good governance. The ceremony concluded with a banquet at Government House, Uyo, featuring congratulatory messages from prominent state figures and the cutting of a celebratory cake.
