President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has emphasized his administration’s commitment to enhancing access to tertiary education through the Nigerian Education Loan Fund (NELFund), stating that Over 70 billion Naira has already been processed for payment to students and their respective institutions, marking a significant step towards fulfilling our promise.

In his address, delivered by Professor Akpofure Rim-Rukeh, the Vice Chancellor of the Federal University of Petroleum Resources (FUPRE), who represented him at the third convocation ceremony of Admiralty University of Nigeria (AUN) held in Ibusa, Delta State on Friday, the President addressed key issues around education funding, national progress, and the role of graduates in shaping the future of Nigeria.

As part of the “Renewed Hope Agenda
” President Tinubu said the pivotal role of NELFund in revolutionizing tertiary education financing. “The establishment of NELFund is a critical part of this administration’s vision to make higher education accessible to every Nigerian, regardless of their financial background,”
the President stated.

“Over 70 billion Naira has already been processed for payment to students and their respective institutions, marking a significant step towards fulfilling our promise.”

He acknowledged that, like all new initiatives, NELFund faced challenges in its early stages but reassured the public that the fund’s progress was a promising sign of things to come.

“Though NELFund is still navigating some teething problems—something all new agencies experience—the results so far are both encouraging and hopeful,” he added.
“I urge all beneficiaries of this fund to honor their loan repayment commitments. Your responsible actions will help ensure the fund’s sustainability and support future generations of students.”

The President called on the graduates to take full advantage of the opportunities their education had provided them, but also warned against seeking solutions abroad.
“I want to remind you that the future of this country rests on your shoulders,” he declared.

“As you embark on your careers, I implore you to be agents of positive change. You have been equipped with the tools to contribute to society. As you move forward, do not be tempted to search for greener pastures elsewhere. Our own grass can be just as green, if not greener.”

Acknowledging the challenges the country faces, President Tinubu stressed the importance of unity, innovation, and commitment to nation-building.
“We are in a defining moment in our nation’s history,” he said.

“Our survival as a nation depends on the collective efforts of our people. Each of you, as graduates, must take up the mantle of leadership and help shape a better future for Nigeria.”

The President also focused on the expansion efforts of the Admiralty University of Nigeria, particularly the new faculties in Engineering and Marine Studies.

“I am encouraged to learn that the university is working towards establishing these faculties, which will play a key role in the development of Nigeria’s maritime industry,” he remarked.

“This is a bold step toward technological innovation and job creation for our youth. These additions will help propel the maritime industry forward, advancing shipbuilding, maintenance, and other crucial sectors that drive economic growth.”

Professor Rim-Rukeh, in his role as the President’s representative, also emphasized the importance of sustaining the momentum of the university’s growth.

“Admiralty University is charting a course toward excellence, and I urge both the management and students to continue striving for the highest standards,” he said.

“The university must remain a center of innovation, focusing its research on solving Nigeria’s most pressing challenges in security, economy, and infrastructure.”

The President’s address continued with a focus on the wider education sector, as he highlighted the steps his administration had taken to strengthen Nigeria’s higher education institutions.

“Recently, we re-constituted the governing councils of federal universities, including that of this great institution. Our goal is to ensure effective governance, proper management, and efficient use of resources,” Tinubu said.

“I urge the Governing Council here at Admiralty University to adopt a strategic approach to funding, exploring all possible legal avenues for revenue generation to support the university’s growth.”

While congratulating the graduating students, President Tinubu also urged them to bear the responsibility of representing their alma mater with pride.

“You are not just graduates; you are now ambassadors of this university,” he said.

“You must carry the values of this institution wherever you go. It is your duty to help strengthen the reputation of Admiralty University, and I urge you to give back whenever your alma mater calls on you.”

In a heartfelt message to the parents and guardians of the graduates, Tinubu acknowledged their invaluable support.
“The journey of education is never one undertaken alone,” he said.

“I commend the parents and guardians who have made sacrifices to see these students through their academic journeys. Your support has been instrumental in helping them achieve this significant milestone.”

Closing the address on a note of national unity and optimism, Tinubu rallied the graduates and the broader university community to work together for the progress of the nation.

“Our progress as a nation depends on each of you taking responsibility for the future of Nigeria,” he said.

“Together, we will build a prosperous and united country, one that can stand shoulder to shoulder with the rest of the world.”

The President’s words resonated deeply with the audience, as he concluded with a powerful call to action:

“Onward to greatness! Long live Admiralty University of Nigeria! Long live Delta State! And long live the Federal Republic of Nigeria!”

The address was met with resounding applause, with graduates and their families leaving the ceremony inspired by the President’s vision for their future and the future of Nigeria.
