President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has mandated the reintroduction of Nigerian History as a subject in the basic education curriculum, a move confirmed by Minister of Education Tunji Alausa during an interview on Channels Television’s End-of-Year Special Review Show.
The subject was removed in the 2009/2010 academic session under the late President Umaru Musa Yar’Adua’s administration. Minister Alausa highlighted the cultural gap this decision created, stressing its impact on national identity.
“What has been missing in the past is Nigerian history. We now have people who are 30 years old, totally disconnected from our history. It doesn’t happen in any part of the world,” Alausa said.
The reintroduction, set to take effect this year, will make Nigerian History a mandatory subject for students in primary, junior secondary, and senior secondary schools. This initiative aims to bridge generational gaps and foster a deeper understanding of the country’s heritage.
