In a bold demonstration of dissent, 43 professors and academic doctors from the University of Abuja staged a protest at the Ministry of Education in Abuja, vehemently opposing the appointment of Professor Aisha Sani Maikudi as the university’s substantive Vice-Chancellor.
The protesting academics, armed with placards and a formal petition, called on President Bola Tinubu to dissolve the university’s Governing Council, citing a compromised selection process.
The petition, dated January 2, 2025, highlights the “lack of integrity, competence, and fairness” exhibited by the council, led by Air Vice-Marshal Saddiq Ismaila Kaita. The professors accused the council of manipulating the Vice-Chancellor appointment process, violating university laws, and exhibiting favoritism. These allegations culminated in a no-confidence vote passed by the Senate on December 31, 2024.
In their letter titled “Complaint Regarding the Manipulation of Vice-Chancellor Appointment Processes at the University of Abuja,” the protesting academics outlined a litany of grievances, including “gross irregularities, blatant disregard for due process, and violations of relevant laws and regulations.” They expressed their dismay at the council’s decision, which they argue undermines the integrity of the institution and the principles of fairness and merit.
The professors pointed out specific issues, such as the “improper composition of the Governing Council,” the “incompetence of the Ministry of Education representative,” and “violations of guidelines on qualifications for the post.” They also raised concerns about “intimidation by security forces, undemocratic Senate proceedings, and an accelerated, flawed screening process.”
In a passionate appeal, the academics called on the Minister of Education, Tunji Alausa, to dissolve the Governing Council and annul Professor Maikudi’s appointment. They questioned the minister’s inaction, contrasting it with his swift intervention in a similar crisis at Nnamdi Azikiwe University.
The petition concluded by urging President Tinubu to take decisive action to restore integrity to the university’s leadership selection process. “This will go a long way in demonstrating the sincerity of Mr. President’s Renewed Hope Agenda,” the professors stated.
Among the signatories were notable academics such as Prof. Olanrewaju Aladeitan, Prof. Umaru D. Muhammed, and Prof. Mabel I.E Evwiohana, who emphasized their trust in President Tinubu’s commitment to justice and fairness. They warned that the current situation jeopardizes the University of Abuja’s reputation as an institution of academic excellence.
The professors’ unified stance reflects deep concerns about the future of the University of Abuja and its governance, as they continue to await a response from the presidency and the Ministry of Education.
