The University of Calabar has officially suspended the General Studies Examinations (GSS) following a distressing stampede that occurred on Saturday, November 11, 2023, at the examination venue.
The university, in a statement released by the university’s Registrar, Gabriel Egbe, expressed deep regret for the unintended consequences of the incident.
The announcement revealed that the GSS examinations have been rescheduled for December 11 and 12, 2023, to accommodate all students who were unable to complete the examination due to the unfortunate incident.
The stampede resulted in injuries, but swift action was taken as affected students received immediate treatment at the University Medical Centre and the University of Calabar Teaching Hospital.
Despite the gravity of the situation, the university confirmed that no lives were lost, and a majority of the injured students have already been discharged after receiving medical care.
While investigations into the incident are ongoing, the university’s management is actively working to address the circumstances that led to the stampede.
In a statement, the registrar reassured the public, particularly parents, of the safety of their children within the university’s care.
