University of Ilorin’s Professor of Ophthalmology, Dr. Dupe Ademola-Popoola, has been honored with an international appointment as a trustee-at-large by the prestigious American Academy of Ophthalmology. This esteemed position will last for a period of three years, starting from January 1, 2024.
The announcement of her appointment was made by the Board of Trustees of the American Academy of Ophthalmology in a letter dated June 28, 2023. The letter, signed by the Chief Executive Officer, Stephen D. McLeod, commended Dr. Ademola-Popoola’s extensive experience, particularly in her service on the Academy’s Global Advisors Committee, which has provided her with a deep understanding of the needs of international members.
Throughout her career, Dr. Ademola-Popoola has distinguished herself as a respected Ophthalmologist and trainer for both undergraduate and postgraduate students, as well as other healthcare professionals. Her areas of expertise encompass Paediatric Ophthalmology, Strabismus, Oncology, Administration, and Project Management.
Notably, she has achieved significant breakthroughs in the field of Ophthalmology and has made remarkable contributions to scholarships and research. Her efforts have brought recognition and honors not only to the University of Ilorin and the University of Ilorin Teaching Hospital (UITH) but also to the entire nation.
One of her recent milestones was leading a team of Nigerian doctors in performing the first-ever treatment of Cancer of the eye in Nigeria. This pioneering feat showcased her dedication to advancing healthcare in the country and beyond.
