A native of Anambra State, Valuable Mbajiorgu, has emerged as the top candidate among visually impaired students in Nigeria, securing the coveted title in the 2022 Senior Secondary School Certificate Examination conducted by the West African Examinations Council (WAEC).
Mbajiorgu, a determined student from St. John of God Secondary School in Awka, demonstrated outstanding scholarly excellence despite facing physical challenges.
The WAEC Nigerian headquarters in Abuja echoed with applause as she was officially declared the winner in her category, recognizing her exceptional performance in the nine subjects she undertook.
This achievement is particularly inspiring given Mbajiorgu’s personal journey.
Having lost her sight to glaucoma in 2008 during her final year of primary school in Awada, near Onitsha, she encountered numerous challenges in adapting to her new reality.
Undeterred, she persevered, mastering the use of the Braille machine to read and successfully navigating her academic pursuits.
Now 21 years old, Mbajiorgu has enrolled as a fresh student at Nnamdi Azikiwe University, Awka, where she is pursuing a course in Guidance and Counseling.
Mbajiorgu’s success extends beyond personal achievement; she dedicates her WAEC honour to the Governor of Anambra State, Chukwuma Soludo.
She applauds his unwavering commitment to quality education and empowerment for individuals with disabilities.
In expressing her gratitude, Mbajiorgu emphasized, “Professor Soludo cares for all, and he is genuinely focused, not just brilliant.”
Her dedication to becoming an intellectual powerhouse serves as a testament to the resilience and potential inherent in individuals facing physical challenges.
