The West African Gas Pipeline Company Limited (WAPCo) has reaffirmed its commitment to youth empowerment by investing $750,000 annually in scholarships and vocational training for undergraduates and young artisans in its host communities in Lagos and Ogun states.
Speaking at the graduation ceremony of the Community Youth Empowerment Scheme (CYES) in Otta, Ogun State, WAPCo’s General Manager, Corporate Affairs, Dr. Isaac Adjei-Doku, highlighted the company’s decade-long dedication to fostering education and skill acquisition.
“In Nigeria alone, WAPCo supports around 170 individuals annually through vocational training and scholarships across Ogun and Lagos states,” he stated.
Adjei-Doku explained that each beneficiary receives support valued at no less than $600, equipping them with skills and tools to start their own businesses. At the ceremony, graduates were presented with certificates and startup equipment, including sewing machines, ovens, refrigerators, and catering tools.
“We feel it’s our responsibility to give back to the communities that allow us to operate here. The company’s efforts align with the UN Sustainable Development Goals, as they prioritize social investment and community empowerment,” he added.
The initiative extends beyond scholarships, incorporating the Livelihood Programme, which identifies and supports talented but disadvantaged individuals with vocational training. Adjei-Doku emphasized that WAPCo ensures follow-up support to help beneficiaries achieve long-term success.
Oba Abdul Azeez Akinde, the Oloja Ekun of Igbesa Land, lauded WAPCo for its impact on local youth, while the Onitetiku of Owode, Otta, Oba Abdul-Wasiu Ogungbayi, called for proper monitoring to maximize the opportunities provided.
One of the beneficiaries, Adeyemi Oluwagbenga, expressed gratitude for the initiative, describing it as a life-changing opportunity that offers a pathway to economic independence and inspires others in their communities.
