Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike has applauded  President Bola Tinubu’s steadfast dedication to enhancing higher education across Nigeria.

Wike said that the Renewed Hope Agenda has revitalised Nigeria university system through landmark interventions that are transforming the landscape of tertiary education.

Speaking at the University of Calabar (UNICAL) during its 50th anniversary and 37th convocation ceremony, where he was awarded an Honorary Doctorate Degree in Law, the minister explained key initiatives such as the establishment of the Nigerian Education Loan Fund (NELFUND).

He noted that this fund has provided vital financial support for students, ensuring that financial barriers do not impede access to quality education.

In a statement signed by his senior special assistant on Public Communications and Social Media, Lere Olayinka, Wike enumerated other significant contributions from the President, including the Students Start-up Innovation and Entrepreneurship Grant, designed to empower young individuals to transform knowledge into impactful businesses.

He also mentioned the removal of universities from the Integrated Payroll Information System (IPPIS), which he said has restored financial autonomy to the institutions, enhancing their operational efficiency.

Wike stated, “Furthermore, the approval for the domiciliation of TETFund Research Funds within respective institutions has strengthened our capacity for groundbreaking research and innovation.”

He asserted that these progressive policies are positioning Nigeria’s university system to meet the challenges of the 21st century.

In expressing gratitude to the UNICAL authorities for the honorary degree, Wike emphasised that the award is both an honor and a commitment to remain dedicated to national development and to inspire future generations.

“As I proudly accept this honorary doctorate, I do so with renewed vigor to contribute even more significantly to education, good governance, and national development.

“I am deeply humbled and honored by this recognition. The University of Calabar has inscribed my name in its golden records, and I embrace this moment with great responsibility,” he said.
