The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, has assured the University of Port Harcourt of land allocation in Abuja for the establishment of its Centre for Leadership and Political Studies.

Wike made the commitment during a meeting with the university’s Governing Council, led by its Pro-Chancellor and Chairman, Senator Mao Ohuabunwa, in Abuja on Monday. The visit was part of the university’s efforts to seek support for a centre modeled after the John F. Kennedy Leadership Center in the United States.

Ohuabunwa highlighted Wike’s political background as a source of inspiration, stating that “Wikematics Political Ideology”—a concept based on Wike’s political trajectory—would be included in the centre’s curriculum if established.

The university also sought Wike’s assistance in setting up a state-of-the-art multimedia centre at its Convocation Arena to mark its 50th anniversary. Acknowledging Wike’s previous contributions—including building the Convocation Arena as Rivers State governor and establishing the Faculty of Law during his tenure as Minister of Education—Ohuabunwa appealed for further support.

In response, Wike pledged to provide the requested land for the leadership centre but clarified that he would not use FCT funds for its construction. However, he committed N350 million of his personal funds, supplemented by contributions from his wife and associates, to build the multimedia centre.

“Government alone cannot do it. Those of us who graduated from the university, and who God has helped, should also support. I cannot take FCT money and give it to you, no, but I will give you land to build your centre. My wife, my friends, and I will provide the money needed to build the multimedia centre you have asked for,” Wike said.

Explaining his motivation, Wike described the gesture as a way of giving back to the institution where he studied political science before pursuing a legal career. He also urged the university’s leadership to engage other notable alumni, including Anambra State Governor Charles Soludo, for additional support.

Earlier, Ohuabunwa said the visit was an opportunity to congratulate Wike on his appointment as FCT Minister and commend his performance. He also revealed that the university’s golden jubilee celebration in 2025 would feature a N10 billion endowment fund. Wike is expected to be honored as one of the distinguished alumni for his contributions to the institution’s growth.
