The first reading of a bill aimed at establishing a Federal University of Information and Communication Technology in Lagos State has been successfully passed in the House of Representatives.

The bill, sponsored by Philip Agbese (APC-Benue) representing the Ado/Okpokwu/Ogbadibo Federal Constituency, was presented during the plenary session on Thursday July 13, 2023.

Agbese emphasised the groundbreaking and revolutionary nature of the proposed institution, which would be the first of its kind in Nigeria.

He stressed the pressing need for a learning institution that aligns with the current information and communication technology-driven world.

Highlighting the advantages of the university, Agbese stated that “it would empower young Nigerians to innovate fundamental technologies, establish new industries, and generate numerous local job opportunities.

He further stated that “the university would bridge the existing gap in mastery and skill sets, facilitating Nigeria’s transition to a knowledge-based economy.”

Agbese stressed the university’s role in advancing knowledge in science, information, communication technology, and other fields, serving the nation and the world in the 21st century.

He also mentioned that “the university would offer high-quality educational programmes to equip individuals with the skills necessary to compete in the job market, particularly those involving cutting-edge information technologies.”

Expressing confidence in the proposed university, Agbese stated that it would provide a lifeline to many talented individuals in the ICT ecosystem who often face challenges gaining admission into traditional universities.

Regarding the choice of location, Agbese justified selecting Lagos as the economic capital of Nigeria due to its sophistication and cosmopolitan nature.

He noted that the state is home to numerous multinational companies and top ICT firms, with Lagos Island serving as the vibrant hub of the state.
