In an effort to confront the pressing issues surrounding migration, the National Commission for Refugees, Migrants and Internally Displaced Persons (NCFRMI) has joined forces with Nasarawa State University, Keffi (NSUK)
The collaboration, cemented through a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU), aims to establish a cutting-edge center dedicated to addressing migration-related concerns.
The MoU, inked by the Federal Commissioner of NCFRMI, Alhaji Tijani Ahmed, and Prof. Suleiman Mohammed, the Vice Chancellor of Nasarawa State University, Keffi, paves the way for the creation of the International Centre of Excellence for Migration and Humanitarian Development Studies (ICEMIDS).
Highlighting the significance of this initiative, Commissioner Ahmed emphasized that the ICEMIDS would serve as a pivotal platform for fostering strategic collaboration between the two entities. Its core objectives include the development of sustainable programmes, support for research endeavors in migration, refugees, and humanitarian development studies, and the promotion of interdisciplinary research.
Mohammed affirmed that the partnership would revolutionize the education and training landscape for future humanitarian and human rights professionals.
Through innovative teaching methodologies and experiential learning opportunities, students enrolled in ICEMIDS programs will be equipped with both practical skills and theoretical knowledge to effectively address real-world challenges.
Furthermore, the collaboration between NCFRMI and NSUK will encompass a wide array of activities, including seminars, workshops, migration camps, and awareness campaigns, involving stakeholders from diverse communities globally.
By providing a platform for knowledge-sharing and collaboration, ICEMIDS aims to foster dialogue, critical thinking, and innovative solutions to migration and humanitarian issues.
Crucially, both parties have committed to supporting research initiatives within ICEMIDS, guided by thematic areas such as migration policies, human rights, labor dynamics, gender-specific migration concerns, health, environmental impacts, and the challenges faced by displaced populations including IDPs, refugees, and asylum seekers.
The National Commission for Refugees, Migrants, and Internally Displaced Persons, as a federal agency, bears the responsibility of providing protection, durable solutions, and managing the affairs of various groups classified as “Persons of Concern.”
These include IDPs, refugees, migrants, stateless persons, returnees, and asylum seekers.
The establishment of ICEMIDS marks a significant stride in the collective effort to address the multifaceted challenges posed by migration and displacement, underscoring the importance of collaborative endeavors in finding sustainable solutions to these complex issues.
