Celebrated Gospel singer Mercy Chinwo and her husband, Pastor Blessed Uzochikwa, have extended full scholarships to 100 deserving undergraduates at the University of Calabar. The announcement was made during their visit to the university on Friday, July 12, 2024, and was later confirmed in a statement by Chinwo’s management on Monday.
The scholarships, provided through the Mercyisblessed Foundation, cover the entire tuition fees and additional support to ensure a stable learning environment for the recipients. This initiative targets indigent yet academically bright students, aiming to alleviate their financial burdens and encourage academic excellence.
The announcement was met with overwhelming enthusiasm by the students, who celebrated the couple’s benevolence. Addressing the crowd, Mercy Chinwo expressed her deep connection to her roots and her desire to give back to the community that shaped her.
“Port Harcourt is home to me any day. The memories are fresh of a city where I dared to dream and hope for a purposeful life. I thank the Lord for His work in me and through me so far. The scholarship is to inspire students that their dreams and ambitions are valid and not to give up because there is a God who has ‘Excess Love’,” Chinwo said, referencing her popular song.
The scholarships take effect immediately, and the selection criteria, along with other details regarding the application process, will be communicated through the appropriate university channels. This ensures transparency and gives every eligible student a fair chance to benefit from this life-changing opportunity.
This philanthropic gesture is not an isolated act; in April of this year, Chinwo awarded scholarships to 50 undergraduates at the University of Port Harcourt, demonstrating her consistent commitment to education and youth empowerment.
