The Role of Technology in Education: An Islamic Perspective

In the modern world, technology is deeply integrated into various facets of life, including education. This integration has opened up new opportunities for learning, making education more accessible and efficient. From the perspective of Islam, education holds a significant place, and the Qur’an emphasizes the importance of acquiring knowledge. The role of technology in education can be examined through the lens of Islamic teachings, where the pursuit of knowledge is highly encouraged.

The Qur’an places a strong emphasis on the acquisition of knowledge. The first revelation to the Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) begins with the word “Iqra” (Read). Allah says in the Qur’an:

“Recite in the name of your Lord who created. Created man from a clinging substance. Recite, and your Lord is the most Generous—Who taught by the pen—Taught man that which he knew not.” (Qur’an 96:1-5)

This verse highlights the importance of reading, learning, and the use of the pen, which can be interpreted as an early form of technology. Islamic scholars have historically been at the forefront of scientific and educational advancements, demonstrating that the pursuit of knowledge is integral to the faith.

Technology has the potential to democratize education, making it accessible to a wider audience. Online courses, educational apps, and digital libraries enable students from various backgrounds to access quality education. From an Islamic perspective, this aligns with the principle of seeking knowledge regardless of one’s circumstances.

The Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) said: “Seeking knowledge is an obligation upon every Muslim.” (Sunan Ibn Majah 224)

Technology can fulfill this obligation by providing resources and learning opportunities to those who might otherwise be deprived of them due to geographical or financial constraints.

The integration of technology in education can significantly enhance the quality of teaching and learning. Interactive tools, multimedia content, and virtual classrooms create more engaging and effective learning environments. The use of technology in education can be seen as a modern extension of the Islamic tradition of seeking knowledge through all available means.

Allah says in the Qur’an: “And He created the horse, mule, and donkey for you to ride and as adornment. And He creates that which you do not know.” (Qur’an 16:8)

This verse signifies that Allah has provided humanity with various means of facilitating life, including modes of transportation and, by extension, modern technological tools. Just as these creations are utilized for the betterment of life, technology can be utilized to enhance education.

While technology offers numerous benefits, it also presents ethical challenges. The Qur’an provides guidance on maintaining ethical standards in all aspects of life, including the use of technology.

Allah says: “Do not follow that of which you have no knowledge. Indeed, the hearing, the sight, and the heart—about all those, [one] will be questioned.” (Qur’an 17:36)

This verse underscores the importance of using technology responsibly and ethically. In an educational context, this means ensuring that digital tools are used to promote truthful and beneficial knowledge, avoiding misinformation and unethical practices.

Educators have a crucial role in integrating technology into the learning process. They must be equipped with the necessary skills to effectively use digital tools and guide students in their use. This responsibility aligns with the Islamic principle of leadership and mentorship in education.

The Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) said: “The best of you are those who learn the Qur’an and teach it.” (Sahih al-Bukhari 5027)

In the digital age, this teaching extends beyond traditional methods to include the use of technology in imparting knowledge, thereby fulfilling the prophetic tradition in a modern context.

The role of technology in education is not only a contemporary necessity but also aligns with the Islamic principles of seeking knowledge and using all available means to facilitate learning. By leveraging technology, Muslims can continue to fulfill their religious obligation to acquire and disseminate knowledge, ensuring that education is accessible, ethical, and of high quality. The integration of technology in education, when guided by Islamic values, can lead to a more informed, capable, and ethically grounded community.
