Wigwe University, founded by the late Dr. Herbert Wigwe, the former CEO of Access Bank, has disclosed a date to commence academic activities.
The university will officially launch its operational activities on September 18 for the 2024/2025 academic session.
The announcement was made by the acting Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Marwan Al-Akaidi, in a detailed statement released on Saturday.
“We shall receive our first set of students into the university on September 18 and 19 for reception, but parents are welcome to visit the campus from September 5. Lectures will begin on September 21. We are fully ready with our world-class facilities to receive the students,” Prof. Al-Akaidi announced.
Al-Akaidi disclosed that the initial phase of academic take-off will include faculties of Engineering; Science and Computing; Management and Social Sciences; and the Arts.
The establishment of Wigwe University is seen as a tribute to its founder, Dr. Herbert Wigwe, who tragically passed away earlier this year in a helicopter accident in the United States alongside his wife and son.
The Board of Trustees, Governing Council, and other stakeholders are committed to sustaining the university and fulfilling Wigwe’s vision.
Situated on a sprawling 600-hectare campus in Isiokpo, Ikwerre Local Government Area of Rivers State, the university is designed to accommodate 11,400 students and 400 faculty and staff members.
In its inaugural year, Wigwe University expects to enroll 2,500 students, supported by a diverse and international academic staff recruited from Europe, North America, Asia, and Africa.
The campus boasts state-of-the-art facilities, including a gas-powered power plant for uninterrupted 24-hour electricity, advanced IT infrastructure, classroom blocks, student hostels, faculty buildings, an admin block, and sports facilities.
